Cú Chulainn's Rage

My good friend Will Sliney asked a bunch of his friends to create some illustrations for his forth coming creator owned book, Celtic Warrior: The Legend of Cú Chulainn. Cú Chulainn was basically the Irish Achilles, a ridiculously powerful warrior who has ever lasting fame but a very short life. Sound familiar?

Here are my thumbnail sketches, I began with a straightforward approach to the project your basic pin up hero poses. But I wasn't too thrilled with any of them, while researching the character during the thumbnail stage I came stumbled this:

"He sets off on a foray and kills the three sons of Nechtan Scéne, who had boasted they had killed more Ulstermen than there were Ulstermen still living. He returns to Emain Macha in his battle frenzy, and the Ulstermen are afraid he will slaughter them all. Conchobar's wife Mugain leads out the women of Emain, and they bare their breasts to him. He averts his eyes, and the Ulstermen wrestle him into a barrel of cold water, which explodes from the heat of his body. They put him in a second barrel, which boils, and a third, which warms to a pleasant temperature."

And I decided to make the moment in which Cú Culainn's rage ignites the focus of my illustration.

After deciding on a composition I went on and fleshed it out some more and liked what was going on.

I blew up the above sketch and reworked it on tracing paper. Ironing out all the kinks.

Happy accident from reworking the drawing on tracing paper was that I ended up flipping the composition with out realizing it. Which in my opinion made it better.

At this point I was happy with my overall drawing and proceeded with my color comps. This is the one I settled on after much debate. ( You can see the rest of my color comps on a earlier post. Here. )

I added a little bit more activity to the boiling water in my final inked drawing.

After scanning in some textures, some gouache painting I did over my drawing and photoshop.

The Thrilling Exploits of Una Albers Lady Adventrix

Here's a couple color variants of a cover I made for the comic

"The Thrilling Exploits of Una Albers Lady Adventrix"

written by Monica Smyczek, Illustrated by my super talented buddy Jake Cohen.

Jake asked for a minimal stained glass style cover, after going online and researching stained glass designs. I came up with the following sketches.

Sketch #3 was chosen and I got to work. After making my color comp I proceeded to paint the different glass tiles with gouache on acetate in an effort to get that nice streaky stained glass feel. I had originally hand drawn all my lines, but they just felt too messy. Enter Stacey and her Illustrator magic, she helped (by help I mean do everything) me trace the drawing in Illustrator for some nice, crisp lines.

Finally, I put everything together in Photoshop for the finish.

Hello,

About two weeks ago I met up with Alex Cutler, to talk about making a
promotional Comic for the film PIG written and directed by Henry Barrial.
The deadline was a tight one and everybody involved in the project
seemed to have pulled an all nighter at some point or another, but we managed to pull it off.
Needless to say I am very happy with the result and it was a lot of fun to work on.

Ch ch ch ch Changes!

Hello;

I was asked to do a comic book style promo card for Todd Stevens, Inc. Todd Stevens is a Realtor who works for Prudential Douglas Elliman here in NYC and specializes in Harlem.
The idea was simple and straight forward, have a woman crying out desperately for a"Real Realtor" only to be heard be a kind neighbor who quickly recommends Todd Stevens. Simple, right? We had our script done in no time and it only needed to be approved by the top at Prudential Elliman, turns out that Realtor is copyrighted word and cannot be used without any written consent. We had to go back and re-draft our script. This was the first layout I sent in for approval. It was quickly shot down since they wanted the picture of Harlem to be completely unobstructed.

This was the tentative back of the postcard since at this point I didn't have any of the information that needed to be on the card.

This was the second layout I submitted for the front of the postcard and it was quickly approved. I thought that the first layout worked better as a actual comic book page, but I suppose this second layout works better as an ad.

After the front was approved I got to work on laying out the back of the card. This was quickly shot down as they thought that it would be hard for the targeted audience to follow a vertical layout after a horizontal front.

This one was quickly approved by Todd but as soon as it was sent to Prudential Elliman for approval it was quickly shot down as it did not have their logo and they thought that the comic book-esque type was not fit for their company.

This was the layout after receiving all the necessary information for the postcard. I really thought that this would be approved. But it wasn't, since Prudential Elliman complained that their logo was too small and that Todd's name and website address could not be bigger than the Prudential Elliman name or logo.

So, this was my fix for that problem and it was quickly approved.

And Done.

P.S. There were actually way more changes, I just didn't bother to save them at the time. Also this post is way too long for me to bother translate into Spanish, so sorry mom...

A couple of months ago I contacted the incredibly talented Argentinian Illustrator Nico Di Mattia, because I had stumbled upon his little project called "La Muerciélaga", a quarterly Illustration and Cartooning magazine packed with amazing talent mostly from Argentina. It is amazing how many great and talented artists are out there working at their craft everyday, many of whom you may never see or hear about in this broad market. A couple of weeks later Nico asked me to be a part of "La Murciélaga" #3. I have to say it is a great honor to be a part of this issue, work in it is top notch and hopefully I can one day meet all of these artists in person.

"La Muercielaga" comes out today in Argentina, I only wish I could be there, since there are having a big release party down there.

Below is my contribution titled "Il Asesino", I'll be making more of these so stay tuned.

Went out drawing today and these couple of drawings felt very natural to me.
There's nothing better when you draw than when you just go into this weird state of mind,
where your drawing feels very unconscious but at the same time you are incredibly focused on your subject matter.
Hopefully I can tap into this same state of mind when I work on my illustrations as well.
That would be fantastic.

Making the Ultimate Wiffle Ball Guide

So back in September of '09 I was contacted by Michael Hermann and Perrie Briskin over at Wicked Cow, Inc. about doing some spot illustrations for their upcoming Wiffle Ball book. Now that the book is out, I got the OK from Michael to post some of the work I did for his book. But first I gotta say it was a lot of fun working on this book and the people over at Wicked Cow were nothing but spectacular in the way they treated me through out the whole process. But the biggest treat of this whole thing was the fact that I got to go to the Wiffle Ball Factory in Connecticut and just draw the whole time I was up there.

So here is some of the work I did for the book, some of it didn't make it in to the final edit of the book, (like the machines pictured above and the pitch trajectory illustration) but I am very happy with all the work I did.

Decided to do a quick Tiger Woods illustration since he teed off yesterday. I wanted to challenge myself and go from start to finish in as little time as possible just to see what would happen. Dr. Sketchy's Anti- Art School

So we went to Dr. Sketchy's Anti- Art School figure drawing and it was
pretty awesome, plus Paul Pope was DJing. The place was
packed and at first I could barely see the model. So I just drew some
of the people in attendance. I was able to move to a better spot later
on and this is what I got.

So I went through the process of being selected as
a juror today down at the Kings county court. And I managed
to squeeze in some drawing.

The Pope of St. Charles Brothel

Finished this about a week ago it's for a book of poems titled
Seared with Ink, Portraits of Life in Poetry and Prose.

The poem I got was The Pope of St. Charles Brothel;
and it is about a Pimp and his "duties". I had a lot of fun with the
drawing and I felt that my lines got to be very playful, which I enjoyed.

Decided to copy some Zorn etchings this morning, the man was a genius
when it came to mark making. All his lines seem to be placed perfectly.
Did my best but Zorn is just way too good.

I’ve been furiously drawing in my sketchbook from life and from my head this past week. My goal? To say as much as I can about the form and character of my subjects with a minimal amount of lines. In other words, line economy. It’s been very tough but a lot of fun, here are some of my results. Let me know what you guys think.

Esta semana e pasado mi tiempo dibujando furiosamente de observación y de mi imaginación en mi “sketchbook”. Mi meta? Que mis lineas describan la forma y el carácter de mis sujetos con un minimo uso de lineas. En otras palabras, dibujar económicamente. Definitivamente a sido una prueba difícil pero a la misma vez ha sido bien divertido, aquí hay algunos de mis resultados así que dejenme saber lo que piensan.

I went down to DC and Norfolk for my spring break with Stacey.
DC was great, especially the Portrait Gallery and the Memorials,
While we where there the weather wasn't the best for drawing, so here is the one
lone drawing of the trip. It is a drawing I did of my
cousin Victor as he was driving us back to his house from
Virginia Beach.

Para mi spring break decidí tomar unas pequeñas vacaciones con Stacey.
Fuimos a Washington, DC y a Norfolk, VA; durante las vacaciones el clima
no fue el mejor para dibujar. Así que aquí está el único dibujo del trip, es de mi
primo Victor, mientras estaba guiando de Virginia Beach hacia su casa.

Old Testament is associated with destruction.
